The trailer of Assi has been officially released, setting the tone for a powerful and unsettling cinematic experience. Slated to hit theatres on February 20, 2026, the film promises an intense courtroom drama that confronts harsh realities many prefer to look away from.
The trailer opens on a disturbing note, drawing viewers into a horrific rape case that shocks the nation. Taapsee Pannu steps into the role of a relentless lawyer, determined to seek justice no matter the cost. Unwilling to bow down to pressure, her character becomes the driving force of the narrative, standing firm even when the system, society, and circumstances turn hostile.
At the emotional core of the film is Kani Kusruti, whose performance anchors the film's exploration of the human cost of the crime. She and Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub play a couple whose lives are shattered after a brutal assault leaves her abandoned near railway tracks. Their story adds depth and anguish, turning the film into more than just a legal battle - it becomes a moral reckoning.
The trailer also offers glimpses of the investigation process and tense courtroom proceedings. One striking moment shows an ink bottle being hurled at Taapsee's face inside the court. Yet, undeterred, she returns to continue her arguments, symbolising resilience in the face of intimidation. The trailer closes with the word "Irrelevant", leaving a haunting impression and raising questions about justice, morality, and accountability.
Sharing her thoughts, Taapsee Pannu said the film was born from a need to bring together stories inspired by everyday crime news. She stressed that such incidents should never be normalised, adding that the film forces audiences to confront uncomfortable truths about how little is often done to prevent these crimes. Shaping these realities into a two-hour narrative, she said, was deeply moving and challenging as a performer.
Director Anubhav Sinha echoed this sentiment, explaining that Assi struck him like a "loud thud" at the very core of its subject. Drawing from real-life news and ignored realities, the film aims to tell a story that compels viewers to reflect rather than look away.
Backed by Bhushan Kumar, Assi is presented by Gulshan Kumar and T-Series and produced by Benaras Mediaworks. The ensemble cast includes Kumud Mishra, Manoj Pahwa, and Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub, with special appearances by Naseeruddin Shah, Supriya Pathak, and Seema Pahwa.
With its bold theme, strong performances, and socially charged narrative, Assi positions itself as a film that challenges the conscience and questions the future we are shaping for the next generation.
