Tamil cinema is set for another exciting fan moment as Vijay's Ghilli and Ajith's Thunivu gear up for a theatrical re-release on February 20. The announcement has reignited the long-standing buzz around a Vijay-Ajith box-office face-off, even if this time it's through re-releases.
From Theri to a New Showdown
The developments come after the postponement of Vijay's upcoming film Jana Nayagan. Fans had been looking forward to the re-release of Theri, scheduled for January 23. However, producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu decided to reschedule it following a request from the makers of Draupathi 2.
With plans reshuffled, February 20 is now the date two major films starring the stars will return to cinemas, setting up yet another fan-driven clash.
Ghilli's Everlasting Popularity
Originally released in 2004 and directed by Dharani, Ghilli remains one of Vijay's most celebrated commercial hits. The film enjoyed a remarkable re-release run in April last year, becoming a surprise box-office success once again.
Its blend of action, romance, humour, and memorable music continues to resonate strongly with audiences, making it a perfect candidate for a big-screen comeback.
Thunivu's Mass Appeal
Ajith's Thunivu, directed by H. Vinoth, was released during Pongal 2023 alongside Vijay's Varisu. The film marked Vinoth's third collaboration with Ajith after Nerkonda Paarvai and Valimai.
Centred on a gripping bank heist and the intense events surrounding it, Thunivu showcased Ajith in a stylish, powerful role that resonated with fans.
Even though these are not new releases, the Vijay-Ajith dynamic ensures strong anticipation. Social media is already buzzing with fan celebrations and debates, adding to the festive atmosphere.
The big question remains, will this re-release once again light up the box office and theatres? If past trends are anything to go by, February 20 could turn into a celebration of nostalgia and star power.
