The atmosphere in Karur is charged with emotion as the countdown begins for what many are calling one of the most significant releases in recent Tamil cinema. Jananayagan, starring Thalapathy Vijay, is set for a grand worldwide release on January 9, 2026. For Vijay fans in Karur, this is not just another Pongal release-it marks the beginning of the end of an era.
Screen Allocation in Karur: A Rare Shuffle
Under normal circumstances, a Vijay film would comfortably dominate four to five major screens in Karur. But Pongal 2026 is different. With Parasakthi-starring Sivakarthikeyan and directed by Sudha Kongara-also entering the race, theatres have had to carefully balance two massive releases.
From January 9, Jananayagan will open in three key theatres-Thinnappa, Amutha, and Kalaiarangam.
From January 10: A planned reshuffle will take place. As Parasakthi intensifies its festive run, it will take over Ajantha and Amutha theatres. Following this, Jananayagan will continue its run in Thinnappa and Kalaiarangam.
This adjustment ensures both films get their moment during the busy festive window.
Ticket Prices: Likely to Stay Fan-Friendly
Although official Pongal ticket rates are yet to be announced, past trends offer a fair idea. For big-star releases during festivals, counter prices in Karur usually settle around ₹ 190. Despite the emotional "last film" sentiment, fans hope ticket pricing remains reasonable-fitting for a film titled Jananayagan, which translates to "Leader of the People".
Why This Film Feels Different
Directed by H. Vinoth, Jananayagan is a political action thriller featuring a strong ensemble cast including Thalapathy Vijay, Bobby Deol, Pooja Hegde, and Mamitha Baiju. Yet, the real reason behind the unprecedented buzz goes far beyond the cast or genre.
At the film's audio launch in Malaysia, Vijay delivered an emotional speech that resonated deeply with fans. He reiterated his decision to step away from cinema and fully dedicate himself to public service through his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
"I am giving up the fort you built for me in cinema to build a future for you in reality,"
Vijay said-words that left many fans emotional.
For countless followers, Jananayagan is not just a movie; it is a 2.5-hour farewell celebration.
