In a move that has thrilled theatre lovers and binge-watchers alike, Stranger Things: The First Shadow is making the leap from Broadway to Netflix. The streaming giant has filmed the acclaimed stage production for a future global release, opening the doors of Hawkins to millions who never had the chance to experience the play live.

The recorded version captures the original Broadway cast in its current run, led by Tony Award nominee Louis McCartney as Henry Creel. McCartney first stepped into the role during the production's celebrated West End run in London, earning praise for his haunting portrayal of the troubled teenager at the heart of the story.

The play officially opened on Broadway on April 22, 2025, after premiering in London in late 2024. Written by Kate Trefry and based on an original story by the Duffer Brothers and Jack Thorne, the production serves as a standalone prequel set in 1959 Hawkins.

It explores the early life of Henry Creel and his family as they arrive in town hoping for a fresh start, only to encounter a series of unsettling events that hint at a growing darkness beneath the surface.

As the mystery unfolds, Henry begins to suspect he may be connected to the strange forces threatening the town. The narrative not only delves into the origins of a key character but also links directly to the events of the hit Netflix series, including its upcoming fifth and final season.

Directed by Stephen Daldry and co-directed by Justin Martin, the large-scale production features a cast of 34 and blends practical stagecraft with cinematic effects, creating an immersive theatrical spectacle. The Duffer Brothers serve as creative producers, with 21 Laps Entertainment attached as associate producer.

Netflix had earlier offered fans a behind-the-scenes look with the documentary Behind the Curtain: Stranger Things: The First Shadow, released in April 2025. Now, by filming the full Broadway production, the platform is taking an unusual step to preserve a major stage show for streaming. This rare but significant move expands the Stranger Things universe beyond television.

The recording was reportedly planned to capture the original Broadway company before their scheduled departure on March 29. However, Netflix has yet to announce an official release date for the filmed version.

For fans eager to return to Hawkins one last time before the series concludes, this theatrical chapter promises to bridge the past and the future, this time, from the front row of their living rooms.
