Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami Flagged off Kona.

Hyundai Motor India Limited, the second-largest carmaker in India, has rolled out its Indian made fully electrified SUV Kona-electric.

It was in January that the "Global Investors Meet" has been conducted in which the South Korean company has promised to invest Rs 7000 crore.

In line with the investment commitment, Hyundai has made a separate division for manufacturing India based SUV Kona electric in its Sriperumbudhur plant.

Kona is now on the grounds tagged with "Fully Electric SUV made in India".

Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswamy and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam green flagged it from "Thalamai Seyalagam" and made their debut ride in Kona.

India's clean mobility realized

It is said that the ex-showroom price of the car is Rs 25 lakh and on-road, the cost would be Rs 30 lakh. The electric powertrain of Kona carries with it the most powerful high voltage 39.2 kWh Lithium-ion battery.

It has an acceleration of 0-100 kmph and will be reached in 9.7 seconds. The maximum speed is 152kmph.

Speaking about the launch S.S.Kim, MD and CEO, Hyundai Motor Company Ltd said, "We are committed to Government's connected, shared and clean mobility. To endorse our fidelity of "Make in India", the car is entirely manufactured in Sriperumbudhur plant.

Hyundai is leading the future mobility solutions globally and brings the latest technology to India."

Charging infrastructure built-up

Kona can be charged in two modes standard and fast charging. In normal mode, it will take 19 hours to charge the vehicle fully, and in fast charging mode, the car could be charged in 5-6 hours.

In a single charge, the vehicle can run up to 452 km. It is also said that when the driver takes the leg off the accelerator, there is a technology built-in, which will generate charging.

For providing fast charging, Hyundai is working with IOCL to develop infrastructure at select fuel stations in major cities and also in business centres. Hyundai is investing for fast charging facilities too.

"Kona" is named after idyllic west coast region of Big Island of Hawaii. The region is famous for triathletes and thrill-seekers. They are very active, and to honour them the car is christened the name.
