Landslide Blocks NH-1 in North Kashmir, Traffic Hampered

A landslide hit National Highway-1 (NH-1) on the Srinagar–Baramulla–Uri stretch in north Kashmir on Friday, January 2, 2026, after heavy rocks and debris rolled down onto the road, bringing traffic to a complete halt and triggering panic among commuters and residents.
The incident occurred amid severe winter conditions prevailing in the region. Continuous rainfall and melting snow in the upper reaches had weakened the hillside, causing soil and large boulders to loosen and slide onto the highway. The sudden landslide blocked the vital road link, leaving several vehicles stranded on both sides for hours.
Although no injuries or casualties were reported, the situation caused fear among travellers who were unable to move from the spot. Residents living near the highway also expressed concern, stating that landslides are frequent during winter and pose a constant threat to lives and infrastructure in the area.
Officials confirmed that portions of the road surface were damaged due to the impact. Teams from the concerned departments were immediately rushed to the site, and heavy machinery was deployed to clear the debris and assess safety conditions.
Traffic remained suspended until clearance operations were completed and the stretch was declared safe. Authorities advised commuters to avoid unnecessary travel and stay alert, as unstable weather conditions continue to increase the risk of landslides across Kashmir.
