Political Veteran Suresh Kalmadi Dies in Pune


Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Suresh Kalmadi died in the early hours of Tuesday in Pune following a prolonged illness. He was 81.
According to sources close to the family, Kalmadi passed away at around 3:30 a.m. while receiving medical care at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, Pune. His demise brings an end to a long public career spanning politics, administration, and sports leadership.
A prominent figure in Maharashtra politics, Kalmadi represented Pune in the Lok Sabha on several occasions. He served as Minister of State for Railways during his time in the Union government and was known for his active participation in parliamentary proceedings. Alongside his political work, he played a significant role in sports administration and served as president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) for an extended period.
Kalmadi gained nationwide attention during the buildup to the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, which placed him in the national spotlight. Although the event later faced criticism and controversy, he remained a recognised figure in both political and sporting arenas.
Messages of condolence came in from leaders across political parties, many of whom acknowledged his decades-long involvement in public life. Congress leaders in Maharashtra remembered him as a veteran leader who helped strengthen the party’s presence in Pune.
His mortal remains were kept at his residence in Erandwane to enable people to pay their last respects. The final rites are scheduled for later today at the Vaikunth Crematorium in Navi Peth. His family survives him. His passing is widely seen as the close of a significant chapter in Maharashtra’s political history.
