The Supreme Court has dismissed the case demanding a reversal of the decision to release the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi bombing case. The case was filed by the three families of the people who died in the blast and Narayanan of the Congress party. Back in 2014, the Tamilnadu assembly agreed to release the 7 convicts Nalini, Murugan, Santhan, Perarivaalan, Robert Piyus, Ravi Chandran and Jayakumar who were given life sentences.

Stalin accuses Governor of stalling

The governor is one who will execute the order to facilitate the release of the convicts. But even 4 years after the official approval from TN assembly the governor hasn't done anything and he justifies his actions citing the number of cases lodged against their release and that he wanted to make sure it is finalised. "But these are just political tactics at play sanctioned by the BJP government," says MK Stalin in his statement. He accused the governor of stalling the process in order to gain some political advantage for BJP.

Thirunavukarasu questions the impact of such decisions

Mr Thirunavukkarasu the leader of the TN wing of the Congress party says that the courts must consider the example they are setting for future legal battles. Though the Congress party is against the release, Rahul Gandhi declared that he hasn't forgiven these people but won't oppose their release last year.

The Moral compass

This kind of cases poses a challenge for governments and courts alike as the law might suggest one thing while the general consensus suggests the opposite. While some believe that they were framed to cover up a big conspiracy against then prime minister of India. Others think that they deserve a harsher sentence. Among all this, the politics over it just muddles the water even more.
