Vijay Questioned by CBI as Karur Case Heats Up

TVK Chief and actor Vijay appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Delhi on January 12, 2026, following a summons related to the Karur stampede case, which resulted in the deaths of over 40 people and left nearly 60 others injured. Under section 179 of BNSS, Vijay has been summoned by CBI. As stated in the notice, Vijay departed from Chennai early on January 12 and reached Delhi in the morning, with the questioning beginning around noon.
Sources indicate that the CBI focused on whether all mandatory safety measures were in place on the day of the incident. Officials are believed to have raised questions about compliance with rules, the availability of drinking water facilities, and whether proper entry and exit routes were in place to manage the crowd effectively. These aspects are central to determining if negligence contributed to the tragic incident.
However, the move to summon Vijay to Delhi has sparked political debate in Tamil Nadu. DMK leader Saravanan Annadurai, speaking from Karur, questioned the rationale for the summons issued in Delhi, noting that the incident occurred in Karur and the FIR was registered there. He argued that the CBI's Chennai unit was capable of handling the inquiry, raising concerns over why the questioning was shifted to the national capital.
On another front, Vijay's upcoming film "Jana Nayagan" has also entered legal territory. KVN Productions approached the Supreme Court, seeking an early hearing regarding the film's release. After correcting errors in the initial petition, the producers resubmitted the plea and requested an urgent hearing scheduled for tomorrow.
With investigations intensifying and legal challenges mounting, questions continue to swirl-is Vijay being politically targeted, or are these developments purely procedural? And amid all this, will "Jana Nayagan" see a release before the end of this month?
