Chennai city is ready for tough times as a red alert has been issued due to the forecast of heavy rain. In response to last year's heavy rains, people have begun parking their cars on the Velachery flyover as a precautionary measure. This is to avoid a repeat of the previous year's situation when many cars were submerged in rainwater.
The Velachery area was heavily affected during the Michaung cyclone last year, causing disruption in traffic due to waterlogged roads and the sweeping away of cars parked in residential areas by floodwaters. Videos of the cars being washed away went viral on social media.
Residents who had to spend a substantial amount to repair their cars due to last year's rains lingering for almost a week are now resigned to the situation. To prevent their cars from being swept away, some residents of Velachery parked their cars in a row on the Velachery flyover, resulting in cars lining up on both sides of the flyover.
