The rain was accompanied by thunder and lightning, with a particularly lightning strike that illuminated the sky for several minutes. With many capturing the video of the lightning, it has spread widely on social media, capturing the attention of many online.
Heavy Rainfall and Public Preparedness:
The heavy rain continued to fall throughout the morning in Chennai which resulted in schools and college closed. Areas such as Kodambakkam, Vadapalani, Valluvar Kottam, Egmore, Anna Nagar, Tirumangalam, Mukappher, and Koyambedu have been experiencing consistent rainfall since the early hours of October 15.
Although the heavy rain stopped temporarily in the early morning, it resumed later, causing widespread concern about waterlogging. Locals have begun to park their vehicles on bridges to avoid flooding, while local markets saw a rush of shoppers buying vegetables and essentials, leaving sections of the stores empty.
Chennai Rainfall:
Due to the constant rainfall, Uthandi recorded the highest amount, with 6.4 cm of rain, while other areas such as Vadapalani, Nungambakkam, Meenambakkam, and Adyar received around 6 cm of rainfall.
Velachery followed closely with 5.5 cm, and Rayapetta, Choshinganallur, Palavakkam, and Anna Nagar all recorded 5 cm. Other areas such as Rayapuram, Basin Bridge, Perambur, and Manali also reported 5 cm of rain.
With the heavy rains continuing and the possibility of waterlogging, both residents and the government are preparing for more wild weather in the coming days. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and advising people to stay alert and take necessary precautions to avoid disruptions caused by the rainfall.
