The popular weatherman, Srikanth, stated that no heavy rain is expected on October 16, and the low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal is moving northward.
The Indian Meteorological Department had previously issued a red alert, forecasting heavy rain due to a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal, expected to cross the coast near Chennai on October 17.
The department had also predicted that Chennai and surrounding districts would experience very heavy rainfall over two days October 15 and 16 with some areas likely to face extremely heavy showers.
Private Weatherman Srikanth Statement:
However, Chennai received rain on October 15 night, but below the expected intensity. In an exclusive interview with a private news channel, Srikanth, a weatherman suggested that no heavy rain is expected in Chennai today like October 15.
Srikanth also said this change to the northward movement of the low-pressure area, means that the heaviest rainfall may now be concentrated in southern Andhra Pradesh.
Srikanth urged caution, noting that there could still be moderate rainfall in Chennai until the deep depression crosses the coast. He also mentioned that the red alert for the city may be downgraded to an orange alert for heavy rain.
IMD Report:
According to the IMD's report released on October 15, a red alert was issued for Chennai and four other districts Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu due to the likelihood of heavy and extremely heavy rainfall.
The forecast also predicted heavy rain in isolated locations across several other areas, including Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tiruchirappalli, Pudukkottai, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
Chennai:
Due to heavy rain on October 15th, some areas of the city are experiencing waterlogging. With the Northeast Monsoon just beginning, locals are already cautious about future weather. Some have started leaving Chennai, while others have begun booking hotels as a precaution. Cars are parked on the Velacherry bridge to prevent further damage. Although no heavy rain is expected, the city is likely to experience moderate rainfall.
