Chennai Rains: Red Alert Issued Due To Cyclone Michaung

According to the Indian Metrological Department, the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal on Sunday intensified into a cyclonic storm 'Michaung' and is likely to cross the South Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam during the forenoon of December 5 with a maximum sustained wind speed of 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph.

Due to this cyclone Chennai, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram Thiruvallur, Villupuram, Ranipet, Tirupattur, Thiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai and Nagai districts will receive rain, according to the Chennai Meteorological Department. The alert was issued as parts of Tamil Nadu continue to witness heavy rainfall in the wake of an alert over Cyclone Michaung.

As Cyclone Michaung' is moving in the Bay of Bengal, the Meteorological Department has informed that people should not go out unless necessary. Due to heavy rain, there is frequent current shutdown in many areas of Chennai.
