The Tamil Nadu Metropolitan Transport Corporation (TNMTC) has announced an exciting initiative, the introduction of 500 low-floor electric buses in Chennai, set to begin in April 2025. This initiative aims to improve urban mobility and provide a more comfortable travel experience for city residents.

Low Floored Buses:

Following directives from Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, these modern and stylish 12-meter-long buses are equipped with state-of-the-art technology and will be operated under the Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model.

The contract has been awarded to OHM Global Mobility Pvt. Ltd., an associate of Ashok Leyland Ltd. and SWITCH Mobility Automotive Limited. Transport Minister Mr. S.S. Sivashankar said that the electric buses will be available for public use starting in April 2025.

Key Features of the Electric Buses:

  • Each bus can cover approximately 180 km on a single charge and is expected to operate an average of 200 km per day.
  • The fleet will consist of 500 buses, including 400 non-air-conditioned and 100 air-conditioned options.
  • The buses will be stationed at five depots, Perumbakkam, Tondiarpet-1, Poonamallee, Vyasarpadi, and Perambur-2.

The introduction of these electric buses is a significant step toward reducing Chennai's carbon footprint, promoting environmental sustainability, and providing a smoke-free, pollution-free public transport service.
