Former Chief Minister Karunanidhi's memorial is being constructed by the government on an area of 2.23 acres in the Anna Memorial complex on the Chennai Marina beach. While these works are going on, the Tamil Nadu government has planned to build a 134 feet high 'Pen' monument at a cost of Rs.81 crore in the middle of the sea.

This grand memorial is named as Muthamil Arignar Doctor Kalaignar Karunanidhi Pen monument. To set up this memorial, permission has been applied to various departments including the Coastal Regulatory Authority of the Central Government. Following the initial approval of the central government, the government decided to ask for the opinion of the public as the next step.

In this situation, the meeting to ask opinions about the pen memorial monument started this morning at the Kalaivanar Arena in Chennai. Officials from various departments including Pollution Control Board, and Environment participated in the meeting.

In the meeting, voices were raised for and against the pen memorial. The chief coordinator of the political party Naam Tamilar Katchi Seeman said in the meeting: 13 fishermen villagers will be affected if the Pen memorial is constructed. I will fight until the damage to the environment is stopped. I will not be afraid of your voices.

We are not against the pen monument, we are against putting it in the sea. Let's fight hard. He said furiously that he would break the pen memorial in the sea at the marina if constructed. Seeman was taken away with heavy police security after a clash broke out in the crowd.
