To celebrate the Pongal festival, the Tamil Nadu government is giving one kg of rice, sugar and full-length sugarcane each to family cardholders across the state, along with one thousand rupees in cash. For this, ration card holders are given tokens, and gift packages are distributed through ration shops.

Generally, ration shops are closed on the second Friday of the month. But now, the ration shops are operating due to the distribution of Pongal gift packages. To compensate for the holiday, January 16 has been declared a holiday.

Initially, January 27 was declared as a holiday, but now, January 16 has been changed, and the food supply department has issued an order. Officially it has been explained that the holiday declared on January 27th has been changed to January 16th due to administrative reasons.
