OpenAI has confirmed it will begin retiring several legacy AI models as part of a broader transition to the newer GPT-5 series. The models set to be phased out include GPT-4.0, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and o4 mini, marking a significant shift in the company's model roadmap.
Despite the planned retirements, OpenAI clarified that there are no immediate changes to its API, giving developers additional time and flexibility to plan migrations without disruption. The company emphasised that this gradual approach is intended to ensure stability while users adapt to newer models.
During this transition, OpenAI acknowledged the strong attachment many users have to GPT-4o, which remains popular among a specific group. The company said it gained deeper insights into how GPT-4o was used in day-to-day workflows, particularly for creative ideation and conversational tasks.
Both Plus and Pro users requested more time to transition their key use cases, highlighting GPT-4o's conversational warmth, tone, and personality as major reasons for their preference. OpenAI noted that this feedback played a direct role in shaping GPT-5.1 and GPT-5.2.
As a result, the newer GPT-5 models introduce enhanced personality traits, stronger support for creative thinking, and greater customisation options. Users can now choose from different base styles and tones, including friendlier responses, and adjust factors such as warmth and enthusiasm. According to OpenAI, the goal is to give users more control over how ChatGPT feels to use, not just what it can do.
With these improvements now in place, OpenAI announced the upcoming retirement of GPT-4o, stating that its core strengths have been successfully carried forward into the GPT-5 lineup.
At the same time, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman assured users that the company will provide ample notice before making any permanent decisions regarding model retirements. OpenAI added that stepping away from older models will allow the team to focus resources on improving the models that are most widely used today.
The move reflects OpenAI's long-term strategy to streamline its offerings while delivering more adaptable, personalised, and powerful AI experiences through the GPT-5 series.
