Online gaming platform Roblox has rolled out mandatory age verification for users in India, making it one of the first major gaming platforms to require age checks for all users before allowing access to chat features. The move is aimed at strengthening safety and ensuring age-appropriate interactions across the platform.

The age verification system determines whether a user can communicate through chat and with whom they can interact. Roblox first introduced this feature in December last year in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands, where the response has been significant. According to the company, more than half of the daily active users in those countries have already completed the age check process.

Global Rollout Underway

Roblox has now begun a phased global rollout of the feature. In addition to India, the system is being implemented in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Brazil, South Korea, Japan, and Indonesia. The company says more regions will follow as part of its broader safety strategy.

Announcing the update, Matt Kaufman, Chief Safety Officer at Roblox, said the company is focused on creating safer digital spaces. He noted that introducing age-based safeguards helps users connect and express themselves in ways appropriate to their age while maintaining strong protection standards.

How the Age Check Works

Once users complete the age verification process, they are placed into one of six age categories:
Under 9,9-12,13-15,16-17,18-20,21 and above
By default, users can chat with others within their own age group and those in the immediately adjacent groups.

For example, users aged 9-12 can communicate with those under 9 and those aged 13-15.
Roblox has also clarified that chat remains disabled by default for children under 9. It can only be enabled if a parent or guardian provides consent after completing the age verification process.

To give families greater control, Roblox has expanded its parental control tools. Parents can view their child's age verification status, update birthdate details, and manage chat permissions. The platform also encourages parents and caregivers to explore the Roblox Safety Centre, which offers step-by-step guides, safety resources, and tools designed to support informed decision-making and safer online play.

Strengthening Online Safety

With this update, Roblox is taking a significant step toward age-appropriate communication and enhanced child safety in online gaming. The company says the new system is part of its long-term effort to create a more secure and transparent environment for its global user base.
