Strong Earthquake Hits M6.2 in Western Japan

Earthquake strikes Western Japan on Jan. 06, 2026, at 10:18 a.m. There were no casualties or injuries. Chugoku Electric Power operates the Shimane Nuclear Power Station, about 32 km from the quake's epicentre, so the agency assured there was no danger of a tsunami. Bullet train operations between Shin-Osaka and Hakata were suspended following the quake and resumed after 1 p.m. The earthquake had a magnitude of 6.2, the highest magnitude to hit the area. After the big shake, a smaller one also hit the place with a magnitude of 5.8 by the USGS and 4.5 by the Japan Meteorological Agency.
After the main tremor, multiple noticeable aftershocks were recorded in the region, prompting local authorities to remind residents to stay vigilant for further seismic activity in the coming days. Japan lies on the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, where earthquakes are frequent. Still, local officials confirmed that critical infrastructure, including roads and bridges, remained safe and functional after inspections.
