The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) announced on Wednesday, March 4, that one of its F-35 "Adir" fighter jets shot down an Iranian Yak-130 aircraft over Tehran, marking what it described as the first known instance in history of a manned fighter aircraft being downed by an F-35 in combat.
According to a statement shared by the IDF on social media platform X, the Israeli Air Force successfully intercepted and destroyed the Iranian Air Force Yak-130 while the aircraft was operating in Iranian airspace during ongoing military operations.
Historic Combat Moment for the F-35
The F-35, developed by American defence and aerospace manufacturer Lockheed Martin, is widely regarded as one of the most advanced fighter jets in the world. Its design incorporates stealth technology, advanced sensors, internal weapons bays, and sophisticated avionics, allowing it to evade radar detection and strike targets with high precision.
Israel operates a customised version of the aircraft known as the F-35I "Adir", which includes Israeli-developed electronic warfare systems and other upgrades tailored to the country's defence needs.
Military analysts say that if confirmed, the shootdown would represent a significant milestone for the F-35 platform, which has previously been used in multiple operations but has rarely been involved in air-to-air combat engagements with manned aircraft.
Iran's Yak-130 Aircraft
The aircraft reportedly destroyed in the incident was a Yak-130, a subsonic two-seat advanced jet trainer and light combat aircraft originally developed through a collaboration between Russia's Yakovlev design bureau and Italy's Aermacchi.
The Yak-130 is primarily used for pilot training, but it can also carry light weapons for combat missions, including missiles, rockets, and guided bombs.
Conflict Intensifies in the Middle East
The incident occurred as loud explosions continued to rock Iran's capital, Tehran, with the conflict between Iran, Israel, and the United States entering its fifth day.
Reports indicate that missile and drone exchanges have intensified across the region, raising concerns about a wider regional escalation.
Israeli authorities said their air defence systems were activated to intercept incoming Iranian missiles, while explosions were reportedly heard around Jerusalem during the overnight attacks.
The IDF also said it conducted a series of airstrikes on Basij and internal security command centres in Tehran, claiming Iran's leadership used the facilities to maintain internal control.
According to Israeli military officials, the strikes also targeted missile launchers and other military systems believed to be part of Iran's strategic defence infrastructure.
Escalation After Khamenei's Death
The ongoing conflict was reportedly triggered by U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, which led to the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, dramatically escalating tensions across the Middle East.
Sources also suggested that Israel had issued warnings regarding potential successors within Iran's leadership structure, further intensifying the geopolitical crisis.
Global Concerns Grow
The rapidly escalating conflict has raised global concerns about a broader regional war, as the exchange of missiles, drones, and airstrikes continues to destabilise the Middle East.
International observers and diplomatic channels are reportedly urging de-escalation and negotiations to prevent further violence in an already volatile region.
As military operations continue and claims from both sides emerge, the situation remains fluid and highly sensitive, with the world closely monitoring developments in the region.
