Crans-Montana, Switzerland – Survivors of the devastating New Year's Day fire at Le Constellation bar are recounting harrowing experiences as authorities continue to investigate one of Switzerland’s deadliest recent tragedies.

Around 40 people died, and at least 115 were injured when the blaze ripped through the packed bar shortly after midnight. Many of the victims were teenagers, and witnesses described desperate attempts to escape through narrow exits, with some breaking windows to flee the rapidly spreading flames.

Several survivors say the fire escalated in seconds. Two victims inside the bar reported that the ceiling ignited almost instantly, trapping patrons on the upper floor. A teenage survivor recalled being briefly engulfed by intense heat before managing to escape, highlighting the chaotic and terrifying conditions inside.

Authorities are exploring whether sparklers or candles placed on champagne bottles may have triggered a "flashover," a sudden ignition of combustible materials. However, the exact cause has not yet been confirmed, and investigators continue to examine whether safety measures were adequate in the crowded venue.

Police have warned that the death toll could rise as they continue to identify victims, who are believed to be of multiple nationalities. Authorities warned that confirming the identities of the victims could take several days or weeks, and several French and Italian citizens remain unaccounted for. France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on Friday that nine French nationals were injured in the Swiss resort fire, with eight still missing, and it cannot rule out that some may be among the victims.

Swiss President Guy Parmelin described the blaze as one of the most devastating tragedies in recent Swiss history and extended his sympathies to those killed, the injured, and their families. The incident has also drawn comparisons with the 1995 Volendam café fire in the Netherlands, which claimed 14 lives during New Year’s celebrations.

As the community mourns, survivors continue to share stories of panic, courage, and tragedy, painting a vivid picture of how a night of celebration turned into a deadly nightmare.
