Tamil Nadu to Upgrade Four New Municipal Corporations

Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister, M. K. Stalin, recently shared that the state will establish four new Municipal Corporations. On Friday, he announced the upgrade of Pudukottai, Thiruvannamalai, Namakkal, and Karaikudi municipalities to municipal corporations.

CMOStalin official X posted, "The Hon'ble Chief Minister @mkstalin has ordered to merge the municipalities of Pudukottai, Namakkal, Tiruvannamalai and Karaikudi and their nearby rapidly urbanizing boroughs and panchayats to form four new Municipal Corporations and initiate related procedures."

In a statement released by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Tamil Nadu is one of the most urbanized states in the country. According to the 2011 census, the percentage of urban population in the state is 48.45. At present, it is estimated that the percentage of population living in urban areas has increased to over 53 percent of the total population.

Rapid urbanization has created myriad challenges for better delivery of basic infrastructure and civic services by urban local bodies. The government feels that these challenges must be effectively addressed to provide a better quality of life to the lakhs of people living in the urban areas of the state."
